I didn't review my birthday prezzie! Shame on me! And it's such a beautiful one-Eowyn and Faramir coming to their understanding, Imrahil and Hethlin looking to the future. But my favorites were the Andrahar and Brand parts-of course the Brand part was an Andrahar part. Particularly these lines-"Andrahar will watch lord and love, family and friends, breathe a new rhythm; he'll keep to the old, but someone must, and he knows no other way." and "Fatherless, he knows the truth – life's not given, but taken everyday, forever. Life is war." Classic Andrahar.

And the image of Brand in the empty house, doing katas with Nightshade-beautiful!

Dwim, months after first reading this – and only belatedly writing down my impressions – there are still so many things that strike me just as hard now as they did earlier.

First is simply your amazing ability to use language as a canvas, or a film camera, or something – it's very hard for me to really express this well, sorry! But just how you manipulate words and phrasing and structure is magnificent, and builds a complete multi-dimensional, multi-sensory image for me. Here, for example, the heady joy just imbues the beginning of the story; the peace of Brand and – finally – Andrahar permeates the end. I know some of it is also your succinct adjectives/descriptions that wholly capture the exact perfect feeling for me, while flowing along so smoothly within the overall impression of the story. (Hopefully that all makes sense...)

Second, you've included so much about so many of the beloved Unabeauverse characters that I was wriggling in my seat with happiness. Full of allusions and half-unspoken assumptions, it felt like a delightfully intimate glimpse even though I know the stories well. You nailed the individual characterizations, of course; and although I think I adored Andrahar's the most, I'm sure you can guess which couple's section I read over and over and over...

Superb title, as always. (I was recently called a "title aficionado" and I suppose it's true. *g*) Thank you for sharing!

Reread with great pleasure over the weekend. Are these some of my favourite lines in fanfic? I think they may be:

In the end, there is no contest, for he's put down all swords, and she has learned they are deceptive props, not to be respected overmuch. Iron-fisted memory loosens; they slip away to fight no more, forever.
