He sleeps, not quietly but with a low rumble at each breath’s departure. Hair fallen across his face, lids closed over green eyes I see even now. He stirs but little, unlike me. Mind bent by dreams of unseen dangers, harms he cannot avoid. Shield, sword hang at their appointed places, waiting their owner’s need. Not enough, never enough in my sleeping horrors. So I keep watch, though this is not the time he will need watching most. Rolling over, he raises half-lidded eyes to mine. “Rest, Faramir. Here.” Strong arms envelop me. Safe for now, I strive against sleep. |
