It is too cold. I cannot feel my feet anymore, nor can I feel any part of my body. The wind blows shrilly over the vast expance of ice, and no amount of covering can shield me from it. My body is frozen. I cannot think but to put one foot in front of the other, and even then, it is a hardship. My husband and daughter try to move me; offer their warmth by holding me and sharing their furs, but I can go no further. I will not survive the crossing. I pray they will forgive my weakness. |
