The world is bent. Venerable charts speak nonsense now. Lodestones that put north before them yesterday show it astern today. They forge on nonetheless, the captain and crew of Venturer. From northern wastes where Forodwaith speak of the new skyfire beneath the polestar, to humid isles where they're refused anchorage, they find they're well exiled. "The world is a belly," cries the greying scion of a once-friendly tribe. "You are cursed that woke its hunger!" The world is a belly, a new world full of tongues that swallow memory: Edonim, Dilmuni, Tantaloi–Númenoreans no more, they return to Middle-earth strangers. |
After the Downfall, some of the greatest mariners of the surviving Faithful lit out to see if they could find any trace of Númenor, and after sailing for quite a long time, discovered that the world was round.
