Excellent opportunity to gather allies together again, even if the billeting does give kings and stewards a headache!
Lots of fun cross-cultural tidbits: I love the discussion of how different Dwarves view Khazad-dûm, and the treasure that originated in it, and the tension just held in check between Elves and Dwarves, by virtue of Legolas and Gimil.
And what a great reference back to the gates of Moria, the great testimony to friendship between peoples who are just beginning, near the end of their time in M-e, to relearn friendship. That could be hopeful or ironic or just tragic, depending on how matters progress. But for the moment at least, it seems that there is hope.
I think, though, that my favorite snippet is the Éomer-Gimli relationship: it appears that diplomacy has advanced between them. ;-) Nice splitting of the hair by the King of Rohan, allowing both himself and Gimli to hold to their respective icons of feminine beauty without having to resort to messy duels.
