I really enjoyed this glimpse of Faramir's 'defiance'. It was definitely the right thing to do morally even if it was illegal and you just know his men (and Hethlin!) respected/loved him enough to follow his lead on such a thing. I loved the 'seed corn' imagery! What a great picture and so true, even in our world. :)

Such a pleasure to read this story (although when I read it there seems to have been a problem with the formatting of quotation marks and perhaps some other punctuation). And what I so often appreciate about your writing in general is the keen sense you have for subtle interactions and how people influence each other. Your stories always ring true psychologically.
I too liked the seed corn analogy, and I also liked this: "Apparently they will unburden themselves to a brigand before they do so to their Captain!"

“Good plan,” said Anborn
Heh. Why use many words when two will do?
I love this one. I love stories about how the economics works. And I like the idea that having broken this law, it's a short step to breaking the one about killing everyone who passes through Ithilien. I wonder what other laws he bent?

An innovative look behind the excitement of battle, into the nitty-gritty of military budgeting; something few fanfiction writers deal with, but which is crucial to any military action. Faramir and his Rangers are well-written, as always.
