I think in this story you have perfectly encapsulated Éomer's character, his wild, free, joyous and generous spirit.
It's one of the best realizations of one of my favourite descriptions of Éomer: "These staves he spoke, yet he laughed as he said them. For once more lust of battle was on him; and he was still unscathed, and he was young, and he was king: the lord of a fell people." (RotK: The Battle of the Pelennor Fields).
And although the occasion of the letter is a sad one, it gives a certain serenity and contentment and gratitude for a life well-lived.
