Soledad:
I very much like this story--I've read it before, in perhaps an earlier incarnation? Despite what some readers seem to think based on my story "Contrapunto," I am not in the anti-Denethor crowd. What Jackson did to him in the movies was a TRAVESTY and the wife-beater/child abuser thing in fanfic just makes a cardboard villain out of a complex man.
In "Contrapunto" my intent was to focus exclusively on the Thorongil/Denethor relationship, which does not show Denethor at his best. In my mind, your story is entirely compatible with mine, although I have a different take on what happened. For example, I think Aragorn had his own agenda and left Gondor because he had other tasks and errands, both personal and official.
I also don't think that Ecthelion put Denethor down. Rather, he held him second to Thorongil--but that's not at all a bad place to be.
Denethor's tragic flaw is his pride, and you capture that well. Thanks!

The title is well chosen. I grieve for his despair, which in the end cost him all. Poor guy. Nice to think he had a love prior to Finduilas, though.
