Beautiful, Una. I'm trying to think of more to say, that I loved the image of the boy and Faramir, and the telling of tales in the game of chess. The gentle tenderness Faramir showed to the White Lady, his knowledge that time was passing and fleet, all of it made this a gem. Beautiful Faramir.

I don't know if I've said it before, but I think one reason I enjoy your Faramir stories so much is that your writing is as subtle and understated, and yet as deep, as the man himself. They compliment each other perfectly, and this is a sublime example. Since Beren is around, and old enough to play chess, I assume this is but a few years before Faramir's death, if that much.

Is this the chess set from "Red River"? It is a rare thing we're shown, adult Faramir losing – Beren is as surprised as the rest of us! ("The Queen," he explained, "has the advantage of experience." *snort!*) How he draws Beren into enjoying his company highlights that his keen observational and interpersonal skills have not suffered from the passage of time any more than his dry humor has.

The many historical allusions that accompany the naming of the pieces is wonderful, just wonderful. Even here, Faramir tucks in quiet lessons that may resonate later – and do, as we see from Beren's later drawing... Such a beautiful reference to Faramir's White Lady, whom he will see soon; not too bad a trade, for not living to see the Tower of the Moon restored. (And that image – through Beren's drawing – was indeed glorious.)

The interactions between Faramir and his great-grandson are a treasure for us as much as for Faramir, and I love the thought that the next owner of the chess set has been chosen. Quiet, thoughtful, sad and hopeful all at once, this is a lovely addition to your vision of Faramir's life.

A perfect story, Raksha--just perfect. No--can't quite stop teaching, can he, even when he had just told his great grandson the story of his life in teaching him the chess pieces. And the child gave back the story in his picture.

Don't mind me, Altariel--just my mind burping again. Please forgive me using the wrong author's name! But this is indeed a perfect tale.
