Oh, Marta, this had me in stitches!
The humour is so very dry and more indirect than totally obvious, just as I like it, the timing is perfect and I just love the image of Imrahil and Denethor engaging in a battle of *this* kind!
And this: He had worn the sturdier military boots, yet still he had limped by the end of the evening. - Just... *snorfle*... Wonderful!

I was absorbed in RL and MEFAs when you first posted this, but I did not forget about it!
Marta, this is very, very funny; reading it again I think I am laughing even harder. For one, I have to agree with you: I think Denethor would have a wicked, very dry sense of humor - the kind that sneaks up on his listeners, and goes over the heads of half of them. I love that Imrahil appreciates this (and since it's for Isabeau, I tend to think of this as "her" Imrahil), and has no compunction about poking Denethor right back.
It reminds me of one of my long-time favorite humor pieces, "Last Elf Standing" by Suzene Campos. The tit-for-tat feuding of Denethor and Imrahil hasn't quite reached that level, of course. Yet. *g*
The possible timeline issues that you noted are pretty minimal, and they certainly don't interfere with how much I enjoyed this story. Your setup is very well done (the study location, Imrahil's drinking, and rereading the letter), and I love that you toss out a tidbit of well-loved Finduilas, who despite it all just can't dance. And the choice of musical instruments of torture: inspired. Great job!
