I love this look at Fingon and Maedhros with an established relationship in Valinor. It helps show that they really were adults before Formenos and the Darkening... even if rather maladjusted ones. I enjoyed your characterizations: of the divide between Nolofinwe and Feanaro (the cart horse comparison was great, as was Fingon's frustration); Turgon and Fingon rubbing each other the wrong way, with Elenwe as peacekeeper; Irisse and Tyelkormo managing to get along by, it seems, ignoring the elephant in the room while it is still vaguely possible to do so; Makalaure noping out the world via his music; Maedhros being manipulative and stupidly self-sacrificing in a way that he has convinced himself is for others' own good (dude, no) (Perhaps he has convinced himself that his and Fingon's illicit relatinship is placing strain on their houses, or been convinced by someone else?), dealing with his emotional pain by self-destructing and taking a good deal of Fingon's happiness with him; Findekano being the one to go after Maitimo and attempt to get him back; and Feanor (for once in fandom) not hating adult Fingon, yelling at Maedhros for disturbing Nerdanel. The passage about Fingon and Maedhros' partially-emptied chambers and Fingon's refusal to return to his father's home added a sense of weight to the situation. This is lovely and gradually more heartbreaking from start to finish. Thanks for sharing!
