In Rivendel they took each other's measure, though Boromir's challenge slept. Aragorn's demeanor, easy during long days of scouting, assumed in the evenings a regal edge that kept Boromir in mind of his claim. Nor could Aragorn forget that Boromir was a great lord in his own land. To see them together at table or escorting Arwen to the Hall of Fire was to glimpse ancient days.

But between Hollin and Moria's western gate cold and fear, the cries of birds and terrible beasts pressed upon them the desperate grimness of their task, and all lesser matters fell behind unnoticed.
